Welshpool Music Festival confirmed for May Bank Holiday Sunday

Music fans can look forward to another edition of the new-look Welshpool Music Festival which will take place on May 25, the Bank Holiday Sunday.

The festival returned last year under a new format from its pub sessions with a move to Welshpool Cricket Club at Maesydre, which has now been confirmed as the event’s long-term home.

“We can now build on the success of last year and improve the infrastructure so we can present a great experience for the people of our town, which hopefully will drive visitor numbers up that will also be of benefit to our town’s economy, as well as marketing our town as a great place to visit,” a spokesperson told us.

Organisers promise a mixture of food stalls, retail stalls and information stalls, all from the local area, with a selection of beers and spirits at two bars at the club "at very reasonable prices".

There will be an outdoor stage for bands, which, this year, will present a wide diversity of music incorporating blues, folk rock, indie, rock, pop, covers, and new music.

Welshpool Music Festival said it fully supports Credu, its nominated charity, and has urged revelers to find out “what these incredible people do as volunteers to help people in our community get through their daily lives”.

Over the past 10 years of WMF (the pub sessions), the bands played for free and were given food and drinks vouchers as there was no funding.

But organisers say that WMF is now committed to paying all bands/musicians, with all stall pitch fees going to the bands, as will an entrance fees which have been introduced to cover costs “as we are not funded at all”.

“This will be just a token amount of £3 or £4, with all the money paying the bands,” said the spokesperson. “We believe this to be a very reasonable figure when you consider how many bands and solo artists will perform on the day.”

And in a fitting development, with kind permission from the Edwards family, WMF dedicate this year’s festival to the memory of Alex Edwards, the son of musician Steve who tragically died last year.

“Many of us know Steve, who has gained an excellent reputation across Mid Wales as a great performer. We are happy to announce that he will also be playing at the festival this year,” the organisers stated.

Welshpool Cricket Club said in a statement that it was “delighted to confirm its continued partnership with Welshpool Music Festival for the upcoming year, and into the future”, adding that they hope to host more music events throughout the summer in partnership with WMF.

Club Chairman, Russell Cadwallader, said: “We feel we have the perfect venue to host this event which was really successful last year, and we thank the people of the town for coming and supporting us for what we are trying to present.

“We are really pleased to work with WMF again, we feel our skill sets align perfectly and are keen to bring this really vibrant event to the town.”
