Storm Darragh brought down thousands of Lake Vyrnwy trees

It is over two months since Storm Darragh ravaged the Welshpool area and Lake Vyrnwy has revealed that roads around the lake are still blocked after “thousands” of trees fell.

The storm, following several days of heavy rainfall, resulted in a whole hillside’s worth of trees falling like dominoes, and two months on the site is still battling to clear the area and make it safe for tourists to return.

An update has been provided by the site which is owned by water firm, Hafren Dyfrdwy, who still have no idea when it may completely reopen.

“Storm Darragh hit Lake Vyrnwy and caused thousands of trees to come down across the site, but mostly along the south side of the perimeter road,” a spokesperson said.

“A combination of heavy rainfall before the storm and extremely fast wind gusts meant that the amount of trees to come down was unprecedented.

“Teams are working hard to get the road cleared as soon and as safely as possible, but the vast number of trees that have come down make this an extremely complicated task.

“Thank you for your patience and making sure to read safety signage when visiting, keep an eye on our social media to keep up to date with updates.”

Lake Vyrnwy is one of the most picturesque areas of Wales, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
