Calls for Red Bank to become a one-way road have again been made after a lorry did the inevitable and smashed into the Old Library stairs at lunch time today (Friday).
The incident happened around 12.15pm when the HGV, coming down Red Bank, took out the stairs which have been the cause of many a wing-mirror being damaged due to vehicles drifting out to avoid them.
One reader told us that it left “one heck of a mess” with another, Jackie Amyes, sharing this image with us of the aftermath.
“The only shock for me is that it hasn’t happened earlier,” our reader, who asked not to be named, told us. “The road is just too tight and I had my wing mirror damaged at the same spot last summer. There is not a lot that can be done except make Red Bank one-way traffic only.”
The road remained open whilst the clean-up was carried out, with police informing the owner of the property of the damage.
Only last year, a sign was erected from the Guilsfield direction to say the road was not suitable for HGVs, but it is largely ignored and pointless.
