“A victory for common sense” as council confirms signage

Powys County Council has u-turned on a decision and will be placing permanent signage at a Welshpool junction after safety concerns were raised.

Local County Councillor, Graham Breeze, called it a “victory for common sense” after it was confirmed that the Welsh Government will pay for the signs at the junction of Union Street and Church Street.

Safety concerns were raised when initial tweaks to the one-way system were done in 2019 to stop traffic from turning right onto Church Street and towards the town centre.

Temporary signs have been placed there since, but Cllr Breeze vented his fury last month after being told these would be removed.

“It is great to see that Powys County Council has listened to local opinion and is seeking authority to change the temporary ‘No Entry’ signs at the Church Street junction to permanent ‘No Entry’ signs,” he said.

“It is a victory for common sense - putting the safety of our pedestrians and motorists first. The plan was to take them away completely.

In a report to recommend that the signs be approved, it states: “Following discussions with Powys County Council and Welshpool Town Council; the Welsh Government has agreed to fund the introduction of a one-way traffic prohibition Order so that the temporary no entry A-frame signs can be replaced by permanent post mounted no-entry signs.”
