Half price Llanfair Ginny rides for MyWelshpool readers in May

23/04/2025 @ 09:54

Our friends at the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway are offering MyWelshpool readers and anyone living local to take a ride on the train for half price over the May Bank Holiday weekend.

This rare offer to sample one of Britain’s leading vintage steam railways that runs through our wonderful countryside at such a reduced price doesn’t happen very often, and it is being done to encourage local people to enjoy what thousands of tourist experience every year.

W&LLR press officer Andrew Charman has given many talks about the line to local groups and said it was surprising how many people had not been on the train.

“To so many local people the railway, the ‘Llanfair Ginny’ as older local people have long known it, has simply always been there and they’ve never really thought about taking a ride,” he said.

“When I tell them about the locomotives and stock acquired from around the world, the fact that almost everyone involved in running the line is a volunteer, and not least the journey, a narrow gauge roller-coaster that is particularly exciting when enjoyed from our open-balcony carriages, they are quite amazed. This Community Weekend provides a wonderful opportunity for local people to experience the delights of the railway for themselves.”

How to take advantage:

An unprecedented 50%* discount will be available to all households in the SY21, SY16, SY15 and SY22 postcodes who book tickets to travel on the line over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend (May 3-5).

Residents buying tickets at Welshpool or Llanfair station on the day can claim their discount simply by showing a proof of address to the booking office staff.

However, as the railway expects this particular weekend to be very busy, it recommends that travellers book in advance on the website at www.wllr.org.uk – entering the first half of your postcode in the ‘Coupon Code’ box on the booking form will activate the discount and the purchaser should bring a proof of address to the station to receive their tickets on arrival.

Want to volunteer?

Almost everyone involved in the operation of W&LLR trains is a volunteer, and all travellers are encouraged to make the most of their day by asking the station master, guard and locomotive crew driving the train about their roles.

The railway is always in need of more help in a host of roles – the volunteer liaison team will be on hand at Llanfair Station and will be happy to give visitors potentially interested in volunteering a tour round the site and to answer any questions.

* 50% discount offer available on Standard Class Adult, Child and Family Tickets only. It cannot be combined with any other discounted ticket or offer. The W&LLR reserves the right to alter or suspend this offer at any time without notice. Full terms and conditions can be found on the railway’s booking system.
