Four Welshpool High School students are celebrating victory after their video showcasing the life of a Ukrainian family seeking refuge from the war won a prestigious award.
Evan Haine, Noah Dearing, Ryan Davies and Henry Seddon entered the Docathon Wales competition, which challenged students across Wales to come up with a video that captured the power of ‘Hiraeth’, which means a sense of belonging in Welsh.
The quartet highlighted the experiences of Mariia Riabchuk and her family, and created a wonderful piece of work that they completed start-to-finish by themselves, even composing the music used throughout.
“Our film shows the struggles and triumphs of refugees moving from the battle wounded Ukraine to the peaceful serenity of Wales,” the lads explained.
“We wanted to explore the deep connections two places can have, even if separated by thousands of miles, as well as the experiences of finding a new home.
“This theme is very personal to us as we have a few friends who have fled from Ukraine. The film was shot in location in Newtown and around Welshpool. Mid Wales is full of stunning landscapes so it was hard to pick only two. Hopefully we’ll have more chances to film in these beautiful places.”
The video really is a work-of-art, and you can watch it by clicking here.
