It's official - Newtown unveils new branding

The town council has confirmed the new brand mark and overall brand strategy for Newtown, amid a lot of questions from our MyNewtown readers down the road.

Earlier today they reported on a brand logo that has appeared on the town council’s website and social media and, following the launch of an exhibition about it in the town centre, they issued a media release.

It has already raised many comments on MyNewtown’s social media channels.

The rebrand, described by the council as encapsulating "A New Newtown," aims to celebrate the town's pioneering history while positioning it for future opportunities. According to the official release, the new identity is built around four key pillars: place, heritage, people, and spirit.

The council has emphasised that Newtown is "a vibrant town set in the stunning Severn Valley, surrounded by natural beauty" with "a legacy of trailblazers, from Sir Pryce Pryce-Jones to Laura Ashley." They describe local residents as "industrious, determined, and forward-thinking" and highlight the town's history of embracing change and innovation.

The brand's distinctive "NEW" logo has been designed to be adaptable, with the council stating it can incorporate imagery reflecting the town's unique character to ensure it remains "dynamic and inclusive." The identity will be used across various platforms to promote Newtown as a destination to live, work, visit, and invest.

Local businesses, organisations, and community groups are being encouraged to adopt the branding in their own communications, with free brand assets and guidelines available at newtown.org.uk and ydrenewydd.cymru.

A Newtown Brand Launch Exhibition is being held from 11am to 3pm at Bear Lanes Shopping Centre from Thursday, 10 April to Wednesday, 16 April (excluding Sunday). The exhibition is highlighting the story behind the brand, offer creative activities for children, photo opportunities, branded giveaways, and new displays throughout the town.

However, the minimalist approach of the new branding has prompted questions from some residents about whether the final design delivers sufficient value and distinctiveness after what has been a significant investment of both time and money.

While the bold typography makes an unmistakable statement, it remains to be seen whether this contemporary design effectively captures the depth of Newtown's character and heritage in a way that will successfully attract visitors and investment.

With the brand now launched, the true test will be how effectively it can be implemented across various contexts and whether it resonates with both residents and visitors alike. The coming weeks will reveal whether this bold new direction successfully positions Newtown for the future while honouring its rich past.
