Forden to rise from the ashes

16/02/2017 @ 10:01

When Forden United called it a day at the end of last season following a brief resurrection, there were fears that it was the end for senior football in the village.

The club probably became a victim of its own success by trying to step through the pyramid system too soon as the announcement of their demise came only weeks after they had confirmed the step up to Spar Mid Wales football.

But it appears that ‘news of its demise has been greatly exaggerated’ with the club set to resume life in the Amateur League next season.

Berriew Reserves boss Jonny Roberts has been appointed manager and he will take the reins at the end of the current season.

“The key ambition is to form a sustainable team, that will be a consistent fixture in the Mid Wales football leagues for the foreseeable future,” said the young manager. “We have a plan to see the team playing Spar league football one day, but we want to consolidate our position first.

“We want to form a team with a core of Forden lads, so we have a strong, loyal base to set ourselves up to progress in the future. Hopefully one day we'll see Forden competing in the Spar leagues for some top honours.”

Roberts has made a big impression at Berriew and says he wants to thank the club for everything they have done for him.

“I had the best days of my playing career at Berriew and then they were very good to me in offering me control of the reserves team this year,” he said. “I feel like I've learnt a lot whilst in this position and will always be grateful for the support Berriew offered me during this time.

“But, when I got offered the chance to manage at Forden it was too good of an opportunity to turn down. They're my home village club, which have strong community links and a brilliant committee.

“I am excited and more than up to a brilliant challenge that lies ahead.”
