Local climate activists have targeted Welshpool’s Barclays and HSBC branches, accusing them of funding fossil fuels and biodiversity loss.
The front of the branches and their ATMs were covered in stickers and posters by members of Extinction Rebellion (XR) as part of an action which took place across the UK.
The local group said that it drew attention to the banks’ funding of fossil fuel extracting companies and accused them of being the number one and two European funders of fossil fuels in the last four years, according to a recent report by the Rainforest Action Network.
XR Newtown & Welshpool spokesperson David France, said that “many lovely Powys locals are investing in deforestation, the arms trade and climate collapse without even realising it”.
“That’s why our group decided to rebrand these banks with an honest reflection of the services they provide,” he said.
