The quick thinking of a lorry driver averted a potential inferno involving a chemical tanker today on the Newtown road.
Firefighters from Welshpool and Newtown were called to the other side of Garthmyl at lunch time today, where a lorry was reportedly on fire.
However, a specialist chemical unit from Newtown was also summonsed after it was discovered that that the lorry was pulling a cargo of molten sulphur.
But thanks to the driver unhitching the trailer and containing the fire to his engine, a more serious blaze was avoided.
“The lorry driver realised the cab was on fire and he quickly unhitched the trailer which allowed the firefighters to contain the fire to the cab and not let it spread,” a fire spokesperson told us.
“It was a chemical tanker transporting molten sulphur which can be dangerous in a fire but it was quickly extinguished.”
