Kinsey shines as Welshpool take derby honours

Charlie Kinsey put in a performance to remember as Welshpool won the Shropshire Division Three Welsh derby with Guilsfield & Llandrinio by 143 runs.

The village hosts started solidly with Nasir Uddin (3-50) causing problems but Kinsey came to the crease and took control with a solid 97 and alongside Sam Cadwallader (56) propelled Welshpool to 251-9.

He then took over with the ball, taking 4-26 as Welshpool cruised to victory and closed the gap on Guilsfield & Llandrinio who remain second in the table.

Newtown were put to the sword at leaders Quatt who bowled the Premier League strugglers out for just 83 and cruised to victory with just one wicket lost.

It was a tough day at the office too for Montgomery who were bowled out for just 63 chasing Bridgnorth’s 294-5 declared to remain bottom of Division One.

Newtown II leap-frogged Llanidloes to go top of Division Four and set up a tremendous final third of the season.

Barry Bellis (56) and Callum Foulkes (51) ensured Newtown II posted a healthy first innings total of 210-6 to set them on the road to victory over Bridgnorth II.

Mike Bellamore then lead the wicket-taking as his 3-23 was the pick of the figures as Bridgnorth crumbled for just 128 in reply.

The 24 points gained were enough to jump above Llanidloes who could only manage 19 points in a winning draw against Harpers.

Rob Davies (107) was in emphatic form with the bat as Llanidloes posted 256-5 with Eogan Jones adding 62.

But the bowlers couldn’t quite complete the job as Harpers held out on 174-9 to deny full points. Jones took 3-35.

Welshpool II eased their relegation worries in Division Five with a superb eight-wicket win over Oswestry II, having reached their target of 164 thanks to Mat Sherwood’s fine unbeaten 102.

Earlier Jake Evans (5-40) and Jojo Thomas (3-21) took the game by the scruff and dismissed Oswestry in the 34^th over.

Guilsfield & Llandrinio II struggled ay Forton who set a healthy first innings total of 227-4 declared. The response started well with Jinil Thilakan scoring 30, but the tail collapsed to just 138 all out.

Montgomery II held out for some points at home to Quatt III who had posted 198-7. Rob Yewdall took 4-47. In reponse, Elwyn Turner (35) and Gareth Jones (36) hung around to ensure they finished on 143-9 for a lesser share of the spoils.

On Sunday, Newtown III fell to 83 all out chasing Whitchurch III’s 114 in Division Three, while Llanidloes II posted a mighty 268-4 to ensure an 18-run victory over Sentinel IV in Division Four.

Welshpool CC celebrated a successful weekend all round culminating in its annual Presidents Day on Sunday. The club XI were defeated in the final over by an inspired Presidents XI. The game was played in fantastic weather with even better cameraderie and spirit. Chris Owen picked up the man of the match trophy with 3 wickets for the Presidents XI.

Welshpool President's Day

The day started with Newtown U13 defeating their Welshpool counterparts in a 20-over game, with some excellent cricket on show.

Later in the day Leyton Parkes was presented with The Peter Davies young cricketer of the year. Alongside Tom Hicks he was also presented with his senior club cap by club captain Sam Cadwallader and captain for the day Warren Roberts.

Another highlight was the induction of the Birch family into the club's hall of fame. Ernie, Judy, Joe, Rob and Sam were presented with a commemorative plate in recognition of their outstanding service to the club both on and off the pitch for many years.
