Guilsfield & Llandrinio have cemented their spot at the top of Shropshire Cricket Division Three with another nail-biting victory on Saturday.
In a top v bottom clash, things seemed to be going straight forward for the villagers after Sajeev Mable (4-31) and Twinkle Jose (3-30) put them in control by dismissing Newport II for just 126.
But the response was fragile with wickets tumbling at regular intervals until a patient and dramatic rear-guard action, led by Andy Flann (27), sealed the win. He was supported by Mable (14no) and 14-year-old Alex Howard (4no) who held their nerve to see them across the line with just one wicket remaining.
Welshpool dropped to fifth after suffering a high-scoring defeat at Condover who are second. The Shropshire side made 238-4 from their 45 overs but Welshpool had a good go at it before finishing 18 runs short. Charlie Kinsey top scored on 44.
Newtown’s struggles continued up in the Premier League where they lost by 106 runs to Madeley.
Chasing 257, with Nathan Smith and Jordan Baijnath taking four wickets apiece, Newtown were then dismissed for 151 with Ben Price top scoring on 47.
The defeat leaves Newtown bottom, a similar situation for Montgomery in Division One who were put to the sword by Shifnal.
A long day in the field meant Monty were set a target of 300-4 (declared after 45) to chase. It proved to be well out of reach with the hosts all out on 157.
Newtown II edged the battle of the top two in Division Four, but Llanidloes held avoided defeat to bag just one point less than the league leaders in a drawn game.
Mike Bellamore led the way once again for Newtown with 100 runs scored off just 58 balls, including eight sixes, as they motored towards a first innings total of 223-8 from 40 overs. Will Denham and Adrian Foulkes bagged three wickets each for Llani.
Denham (45), Rob Davies (41no) and Rhys Jones (35) then frustrated the Newtown attack to finish on 205-6 and grab a big share of the points.
Welshpool II suffered an eight-wicket defeat at home to promotion-chasing Pontesbury II with only Patrick Davies (29) reaching double figures as they were dismissed for just 94.
Jinil Thilakan (84), Rich Lewis (60no), Gary Griffiths (38) and Paul Arkell (28no) all enjoyed some runs as Guilsfield & Llandrinio II posted a season-high 256-6 on their way to victory against Acton Reynald in Division Six.
Arkell then picked up the ball to take 4-17 and with George Edwards (3-30) also looking sharp, they were able to dismiss their hosts for 154.
Montgomery II are just above the relegation zone in Division Six following a two-wicket defeat at home to Forton II.
Only Tom Corfield (30) made any headway as Monty were dismissed for 157, with the visitors reaching their target in the 39th over.
On Sunday, Newtown III suffered a 43-run defeat at home to St George’s V in Division Three after being set a target of 202.
And in Division Four, Llanidloes II’s chase for 235-5 set by Wroxeter & Uppington III ended on 202-5, despite an impressive 101 from Dave Moody.
