Kings edge top-of-the-table clash

The Welshpool Darts League, sponsored by T.A. Jones Haulage, has produced some epic contests once again across the three divisions, writes Jordan Harding.

Division One

The defending champions, Kings Head A, edged a huge top-of-the-table clash 4-3 to pull level with the Compass A — and the pair now sit six points clear at the top, looking increasingly like the two sides everyone else will have to chase.

Kacey Jones was superb for the visitors, hitting a 180 and a brilliant 14-darter, while Dave Rix added a classy 125 checkout. The Compass matched the scoring blow for blow, but the Kings were sharper in the big moments and took the win.

A razor-tight contest saw the Punchbowl hand the Dragon a second straight defeat.

Mitch & Rhys Butler won for the Dragon, but Tim Barley and Punchbowl captain Liam Astley claimed important wins over Dragon captain Shaun Humphries and Den Williams.

The standout display came from Chris Jay, who produced two 15-dart legs and a tidy 108 finish, one of the best individual performances anywhere in the league this week.

A high-quality match saw the Owl & Pussycat race into a 4–0 lead before the Westwood battled back to take the final three rubbers.

In the singles, Joe Jones beat Chris Proctor 3–1, responding to Proctor’s superb 15-darter with a sharp 16-darter of his own. The other standout contest saw Mat Knight edge Jamie Cater 3–2, firing in 2×180s and a 106 finish as he continued his remarkable season. Knight now has six 180s in six games, making him the outright league leader.

It was a dominant showing from the Pheasant, who took four of the five singles to seize control early and win 5-2 over the Red Lion whose only singles came from Arwyn Watkins, who edged impressive youngster Billy Evans 3–2 in one of the matches of the night.

The standout display came from Gareth Ashley, who delivered the league’s performance of the week with two 15-dart legs, a 180, and a clinical 120 finish. The Pheasant were ruthless in the big moments and fully earned the victory.

The Oak claimed their first win of the season with a gritty 4-3 win at The Westwood.

Steve Lloyd (Westwood) stayed unbeaten in singles, while Hywel Lloyd (Oak) produced a tidy 17-darter to help secure a much-needed victory.

With confidence restored, the Oak will look to push on from this and lift themselves off the foot of the table in their remaining two games before the Christmas break

Division Two

The Angel A edged a tight contest 4-3 over the Grapes A to keep themselves firmly in the promotion hunt. They took the singles 3–2, helped by a superb 180 from Alastair Williams in his win over Kieran Woodward.

Rob Jones pulled one back for the Grapes A in the final singles, making it 3–2 and keeping the match alive heading into the doubles.

The pairs were shared, giving the Angel a narrow but deserved 4–3 victory and keeping them joint second, six points behind leaders Powis Arms A.

The Black Lion made it two wins on the bounce, pulling themselves level with the Angel A in second place. The Grapes B made a brilliant start, moving 2–0 up through wins from Duncan Cork and captain Gareth Isaac, but the Black responded by taking the final five games.

A tidy 102 checkout from Tom Bowen was the standout moment of the turnaround.

League leaders Powis Arms A delivered a convincing 6-1 at a Kings B side who started the night in second. Simon Richards, Keith Scott, Konrad Scott and Sam Evans all impressed to keep the Powis well clear at the top.

The Kings B’s only point came from Glyn Jones, who beat Graham Pierce, but Powis controlled the match throughout to remain strong favourites for the title.

Castle A continued their strong push in fourth, taking the singles 4–1 and finishing the job, 5-2, in the pairs against the Red Lion Misfits. Youngster Morgan Roberts secured the victory with a composed win over Liam Williams, while his dad Paul Roberts suffered Castle’s only singles defeat to Elfyn Williams.

Elfyn capped an excellent night by winning his doubles with Jane Evans to secure the two points for the Misfits.

In a bottom-of-the-table clash, the Dragon C finally earned their first win of the season with an excellent team performance against the Lion Caerhowel whose Guy Weaver was their only player to win in the singles.

The Dragon C took control through singles with victories from Andy Bunton, Alasdair Moore, Ollie Evans, and Nathan Jones, whose win came despite Jed Williams hitting a superb 110 checkout.

A long-awaited breakthrough for the Dragon, who now have momentum heading into December.

Division Three

The Angel B remain unbeaten in second place, showing resolve to come back from 3–2 down after the singles. The Compass started strongly with wins from John McDonald, Ronan Edge, and Rhett Bailey, but the Angel hit back.

Siblings Sean and Sophie Jones levelled the match in the first doubles before Harry Gannon and Charlie Wines clinched the final pair to secure the win.

The division’s other unbeaten side, league leaders the Breidden, came from 3–2 down to win and maintain their four-point advantage at the top against Castle B who drop to the bottom of the table, though their performance showed they are more competitive than their league position suggests.

Castle struck first through John Lewis, but the Breidden replied via Antony Hilditch and Robbie Pugh. Castle then responded with singles wins from Steve Allsbrook and Ian Lewis to lead 3–2.

As so often this season, Breidden proved clinical in the pairs, winning both doubles to stay unbeaten.

A brilliant night for the Grapes C, who produced their best performance of the season so far with a 40-3 win over the Powis Arms B. They raced into a 4–1 lead after the singles, with Harvey Isaac the only Powis Arms B player to win.

But Powis battled back by taking both doubles, despite the Grapes already sealing the points. The result leaves the sides level on points in mid-table.

The Horseshoe Arddleen continued their impressive season with a well-earned win at The Grapes D that keeps third.

The Grapes started brightly thanks to victories from Martin Gough and Gwyn Jones, but the Horseshoe responded superbly, winning the final three singles to take charge.

The doubles were shared, leaving the Grapes D comfortably placed in fifth while the Horseshoe stay firmly in the promotion race.

The Owl & Pussycat B climbed off the foot of the table with a strong performance at The Talbot.

Rob Finney was the standout for The Talbot, winning their only singles. The Owl B took the other four through Jacob Schofield, Ajay Taylor, and brothers Jack Windsor and Adam Knight. The doubles were shared to round out a deserved 5–2 win for the visitors.
