Football club’s huge grant win is “game-changer”

Welshpool Town Football Club have secured their biggest win of the season – and it has been described as a “game-changer” for footballers and their families for generations to come.

The club has secured a Cymru Football Foundation (CFF) grant for just over £63,500, which will be ploughed back into improving the pitches at the Wayne Evans Playing Fields as well as providing a sustainable and environmentally friendly toilet block.

The money, together with partnership funding from Sport Wales and almost £8,000 raised by the club, will go towards developing the fields which were created following a huge community campaign to replace the pitches lost to the new primary school on Salop Road.

“The improvements to the Wayne Evans Playing Fields provided by these grants will be a game-changer for the club, both in terms of how to look after the pitches and the activities that can take place on them,” said club secretary, Eva Bredsdorff.

“Thank-you so much to CFF, to Sport Wales, and to all players, coaches and volunteers within the club who helped to raise money, and to all businesses and supporters who have sponsored the project or donated money.”

Here’s what will be funded:

  • The club will undertake further drainage works as well as purchase pitch maintenance equipment, which will enable the club to further improve the three pitches.
  • A sustainable and environmentally friendly toilet block will be purchased, which is self-contained and movable, uses solar panels and batteries to produce and store electricity, harvests rainwater for handwashing and recycles grey water in micro-flush toilets.
  • These developments will enable the club to expand its activities on the Wayne Evans Playing Fields, making sure that more players – young and old – can play and enjoy football.
