One of the finest, and most popular, local cricketers of the last 40 years has proved there is still life in the legs yet by smashing a majestic century in the Shropshire League at the weekend.
Rupert Shingler has been in superb form for Guilsfield & Llandrinio II this season, and scored a season-best 109 as his side set 275-5 against Chirk II to get their promotion bid back on track. Jinil Thilakan (54), Alex Parry (34) and Matt Edwards (29no) backed the veteran up.
But Chirk dug in and denied an outright win by holding out on 184-5.
Meanwhile, Newtown’s Premier League struggles continued after being dismissed for 121 chasing just 132 set by bottom side Bridgnorth.
Sam Baugh (4-45) and David Laird (3-11) did their bit to restrict Bridgnorth, but the response collapsed despite a 40 from Marco Malan.
Tom Anderson (82) and Gaz Bromley (65) guided Montgomery to 281-9 and a winning position against Column in Division Two.
Ed Bennett (3-9) and Anderson (3-46) then led the charge for victory as the hosts were dismissed for 142 to continue Monty’s bid for promotion.
Welshpool’s promotion push in Division Three was frustrated by Ludlow II whose 194-8 proved out of reach. Skipper Matt McWhinnie took 3-28.
Paul Chapman top scored with 48 in Welshpool’s reply, which ended on 160-9.
Guilsfield & Llandrinio put in an improved showing at promotion-chasing Wem II after being set a mighty 285-9 to chase. Jack Windsor and Nasir Uddin took three weeks each.
Six players then got into the 20s in reply as they managed to hold out on 192-9, with Dave Jones again proving the hardest to remove by finishing unbeaten on 28. The 10 points gained from the draw ensure they remain just above the bottom two.
It was a disappointing day in Division Four for both Newtown II and Llanidloes who both fell to defeats. Newtown II lost to Harpers after setting just 150, with Callum Foulkes (69) top scoring and Llanidloes were dismissed for just 83 at Newport II who sailed to an eight-wicket win.
Welshpool II were awarded the points in Division Six after Acton Reynald forfeited the game, and Montgomery II were in the runs as they beat Wellington IV by 106 runs.
Dan Perkins (69), Craig Pearce (46no) and Alex Haycock (43) enjoyed decent knocks as Monty posted 271-7. Rob Yewdall (5-40) and Pearce (4-50) then took control as the hosts were dismissed for 165.
Dave Anthony hit 57 as Newtown III continued their charge for the Sunday Division Three title with a 111-run win over Sentinel IV.
Llanidloes fell nine runs short chasing Bridgnorth III’s 206-6 despite the best efforts of Matt Savage (88).
