Look who’s back!

The season may not be over yet, but one club, Berriew, have made a major announcement with the return of David Jones to the helm.

Jones, who entered management by saving Welshpool Town from collapsing and then taking Berriew to a Mid Wales League Two title and Cup double (2016), Mid Wales League Cup (2017) and then the Central Wales Cup (2019) has returned after a three-year break.

We caught up with him last night to find out why the time was right to make a return to the game.

“I am delighted to be returning as Berriew manager after three years out of the game,” he told us.

“I definitely needed a break when I stepped down in April 2022, but I’m now looking forward to getting back involved and the challenges ahead.

“After James Langford decided to step down the club asked whether I’d be interested in returning, and it felt like the right time to come back and try and lead the club back up the football pyramid.

“Firstly, I would like to say what a great job James Langford did over the past three years in very difficult circumstances. He took on the role with virtually no first team players at the time and kept the senior team going when it quite easily could have folded, before leading them to a very respectable fifth place finish in his second season.

“Despite the first team’s recent struggles, the club overall is still thriving, with its junior set up and ladies team both up there with the best in mid wales.

“In terms of future plans, since I was last in charge the club have obviously dropped into tier 4, so ultimately the aim is to get the club back to tier 3 as soon as possible.

“That won’t be easy given that there is only one promotion spot and it will be a very competitive league next season.

“Nevertheless, the club have some good young players and if we can add a few older heads then I am confident we can have a successful season next term.

“I will be assisted by former Welshpool Town, Cefn Druids and Isle of Man goalkeeper Grant Dawson, and further announcements regarding backroom staff will be made shortly.”
