The Kings Head took full advantage of points dropped by the teams around them to open up a lead at the top of the Welshpool and District Darts League sponsored by The New Saints FC, writes Steve Lloyd.
The Kings Head A came away from the Punchbowl with a 6-1 thanks to victories for Jon Gamble, Dave Rix, Kacey Jones and Gareth Steadman and both doubles. Punchbowl’s Chris Jay grabbed a consolation win.
This result and the Green Dragon A letting home advantage slip against the Westwood A, 4-3, puts the Kings three points clear at the top.
For the Green Dragon A, Mitch Butler won his singles match and they won both of the doubles matches. But the Westwood A clinched victory through Gareth Ashley (180), Alan James, John Gibbs and Dave Watson.
The Compass are now third, but find themselves 10 points behind the leaders after a 4-3 loss at the Red Lion A. Tom Evans, Gwyn Evans and John O’Sullivan all won for the Red Lion A, while Gareth Richards and Brian Jones won for the Compass. The doubles were shared. Of note, was a 15-dart 501 from Arwyn Watkins for the Red Lion A.
The Westwood B move into fourth after a 7-0 win on home turf against the Green Dragon C. Jordan Harding, Chris Proctor, Theo Davies, Ben Davies and Jamie Cater all won with the doubles also secured for the whitewash.
In the last game in the first division, the Oak came away from the Grapes A with a 6-1 win.
In the second division, a top of the table clash between The Pheasant and The Owl & Pussycat went the way of the Owl, 4-3.
For the Pheasant, Bobby Gough, Matt Austin and Rob Finney won while the Owl & Pussycat took the honours through Callum Greatorex, Matt Knight and both doubles to keep them within one point of the leaders.
Castle A are one of those in top spot after a 4-3 win against the Angel at Castle Caereinion with Paul Roberts and Steve Allsbrook wins and both doubles secured, while Kyle Goodwin, Alister Williams and Dylun Davis replied for the Angel.
Also, level top are the Kings Head B after a 5-2 win away at the Red Lion Misfits. Liam Williams and Dumbo Williams won for the Misfits while David Howard, Glyn Jones, Paul (Ircol) Jones and both doubles accounted for the Kings B.
Black Lion are now fifth, only six points behind the leaders after a 5-2 win at the Grapes B. Tom Bowen, Dan Morgan, Ryan McVeagh and Iestyn Pryce won while the in-form Rob Jones kept his bid for the most wins in the second division. The doubles were shared.
In the last game in the second division, the Powis Arms stay mid-table after a 5-2 win at the Lion Caerhowell. Conrad Scott, Finn Buckley, Harry Bonsall and Sam Evans won for the Powis, while Guy Weaver won for the Lion. The doubles were shared.
In summary, there is only one point between the top four teams in the second division making it a close call as we head into the second half of the campaign to see who can gain promotion, while the Kings Head A are now setting the pace for the others to catch in the first division.
