Local racer James Owen has taken gold in the GT Single-Make Ferrari class for Team UK at the FIA Motorsport Games in Valencia.
The Trofeo Pirelli AM title holder, started off in P2, with favourites Spain leading the 11-car grid.
Owen, who hails from Welshpool, said: “I had a great result, P1, it was a hard-fought battle and came back at the end, really-strong. We were lapping about three quarters of a second faster than the guy in P1, managed to get past him on track, which was the main thing, then into turn one on the last lap he hit me from behind, but, it didn’t matter. He had a penalty anyway. So, I limped it home and got the gold – really happy!”
GT racing enjoys a very strong tradition at the FIA Motorsport Games, stretching back to the inaugural edition in 2019.
This year, Team UK has its strongest cohort yet, with 24 competitors flying the flag, the largest representation of UK motorsport talent to date.
About FIA Motorsport Games
The FIA Motorsport Games is a unique multidisciplinary event that sees drivers competing in the colours of their national flag. Organised by SRO Motorsports Group in partnership with the FIA, six disciplines formed the schedule at the inaugural 2019 event, with 49 countries and territories represented in GT, Touring Car, Formula 4, Drifting, Karting Slalom and Digital competitions.
The second edition in 2022 saw all six disciplines return, alongside an influx of 11 new disciplines. James Baldwin claimed Team UK’s first ever gold medal in 2022, winning the Esports category whilst Ian Loggie and Sam Neary secured bronze in the GT. British drivers put in stellar performances across all competing categories and were unlucky to miss out on further medals.
Motorsport UK – one of over 70 ASNs to field a team in the FIA’s global celebration of the sport – ended the four-day competition with their first medals, in Esports and GT respectively, placing Team UK fifth in the final medal table.
This year will see 82 participating nations and over 700 competitors take part in the third edition of the biennial event. Team UK will be comprised of 24 competitors – the largest representation of UK motorsport talent to date.
