Olympic medallist set for Welshpool talk

08/10/2024 @ 10:58

The Olympic silver medallist with strong roots in Welshpool will be returning to share his experiences later this month with the town’s Rotary Club.

Ollie Wynne-Griffith, the grandson of well-known former dentists Mike and Jean Wynne-Griffith and son of Richard from Welshpool, won silver with partner Tom George in the rowing at this summer’s Paris Olympics.

It was an astonishing race that had Team Britain fans on the edge of their seats, and he will share his life journey and the Olympic experience on October 23 at The Royal Oak Hotel.

Prior to that on October 9, Barbara Norbury of Marie Curie Charity will be the guest speaker.

Meanwhile, the recent September meeting welcomed two visiting Rotarians from the Cheltenham Club, who were visiting relatives in the area.

Oliver Lewis was the guest speaker at the club’s meeting earlier in the month. Mr Lewis is a resident of Montgomery and a local Councillor for the Town. He was also the Refom UK candidate at the last election.

Introducing Mr Lewis to members the President Mrs Wendy Beaven informed members that Mr Lewis recent published book ‘The Orwell Trail’ has led, in part, to his becoming a member of the Royal Geographical Society. He has a broad range of interests including finance and politics, however on this occasion his talk was about the extensive research he has undertaken on the Lymore Estate, and the Herbert Family. He was thanked by Rtn Jeff Davies.
