Adele launches Welshpool Athletics Club

Welshpool’s Adele Nicoll may have her sights fixed on becoming a summer and winter Olympian, but it hasn’t stopped her delivering on a promise of launching a new Athletics Club for the town.

The determined Team GB shot putter and bobsleigh star has announced that “something new for the children in the town” will be launched on July 2, after putting seven females through their coaching qualifications to join two qualified males on her team.

“This is a non-profit organisation which has taken me a really long time to bring to life,” explained Adele.

“In 2020, I moved back home after five years away and was determined to make this happen. There were lots of obstacles to get over; hours of paperwork, time and financial investment but we’ve done it!”

During the club’s process to start up, Adele ran holiday camps last year under the Adele Nicoll Academy umbrella to generate interest in the sport and provide a safe space for children to explore something new.

The success of those pilot camps has encouraged her now to offer the sport on a regular basis.

Ages 9+ will be able to register for Welshpool Athletics Club, which is officially affiliated with Welsh Athletics meaning that youngsters can enter any open competitions in the UK (and overseas) and compete against children from other clubs.

She explained that ages 5-9 will be able to participate in fun academy sessions until they are old enough to register with the club.

Adele also said she will probably register herself with the aim of fulfilling her dream of “competing with Welshpool on my vest”.
