The Green Dragon A have followed up their league title by claiming the inaugural Charity Shield, bringing the Welshpool and District Darts League to a close at the Punchbowl, writes Steve Lloyd.

The Shield saw the league champions face the League Cup winners – Grapes A – in seven singles matches played as best-of-three 501 legs.

Mitch Butler got things underway for the Dragon, beating Ben Davies, 2-0, before Robin Shingler extended the lead with a 2-0 win over Jamie Cater.

Shaun Humphreys made it 3-0 with a win over Carl Dockerty before Jordan Harding pulled a leg back for the Grapes A, beating an unlucky Dave Boyle. Graham Lewis brought the scores within one with a fine win over Den Williams, including a 180.

But young Rhys Butler grabbed the decisive fourth win for the Dragon A over Chris White to confirm victory for the Dragon, before Keith Gamble beat Paul Bowers, 2-0, including a 180 in the night’s final game.

The Green Dragon A were worthy winners of this inaugural trophy, which will be played for the next 10 years to make money for local charities. A total of £70 was made on the night and the committee will meet to decide which charity will benefit.

“We would like to thank all of the sponsors of the league this year which without you the league would not run,” said a league statement.

“The committee would also like to thank the Punchbowl for a very warm welcome to both of the teams and fine hospitality on the evening.”

With the success of the Welshpool and District Darts League this year and proposed new teams next year, they are looking to extend the number of committee members.

Anyone wishing to help please should attend the Annual General Meeting which will be announced soon.

The committee this year was: John Gibb, Chairman; Dianne Parr, Secretary – Treasurer; Shaun Humphreys, Fixture Secretary; members - Jordan Harding, Gareth Steadman, Steve Lloyd.

There is a summer league proposed and if anyone would like to enter a team, contact Colin Quinn at the Grapes Welshpool, not the committee members as Colin needs the entries.
