Big derby match headlines rugby weekend

The much-awaited derby between Newtown and Welshpool takes place at the Rec in Newtown this weekend, writes Gary Williams.

Following last week's disastrous situation when both clubs failed to raise a side for their respective league games, you can be sure that they’ll both be champing at the bit to take the spoils.

Although early days in the league, it is not good reading to see both clubs holding the rest up and a win on Saturday could move the victors up a couple of spots.

Recent games between the two have been very close and we shouldn't expect anything different this time around.

Whilst their senior side take on Welshpool on the main pitch, the Newtown Youth team will be hosting Ruthin Youth on the adjoining field.

In Division One, COBRA, having suffered a heavy defeat at league leaders Nant Conwy last weekend, will have an equally difficult game on their hands as they host second-placed and unbeaten Ruthin at Cae Meifod.

New COBRA coach, Marc Roberts, will be hoping that the recent good showings by his side can be built on and any points gained in this fixture will be seen as continuing progress.

In Division Three North East, after some postponements and re-arrangements, we have COBRA 2nds hosting Machynlleth. Very difficult to predict the winner in this and a lot depends on the squad that Machynlleth travel with. This should be an entertaining tussle with COBRA's mixture of young and 'mature' well capable of causing an upset.

It is disappointing that unbeaten league leaders Llanidloes are unable to field a side to travel to Mold 2nds.

On Sunday, COBRA Ladies host Pontyclun Ladies in the WRU Women's Premier League with a 2.30pm kick off in Meifod.
