The aftermath of last week’s calamitous car crash that saw a lamppost and a telegraph pole taken out by a suspected drunken driver is wreaking havoc for residents on Bron-y-Buckley.
Brook Street was closed following the incident to allow engineers to replace the pole, but nearly a week on and residents are still without internet and landlines.
One resident who runs a photography business from home said she has had to put work on hold this past week, while another elderly lady who relies on her landline is cut off.
They are furious at the lack of action from BT Openreach who are responsible for the infrastructure, and said that constant enquiries were getting them nowhere.
More worryingly is that cables are still left strewn across gardens, with residents reluctant to touch them.
“They’ve been awful with contact,” said Vix Davis, who runs Pix by Vix from her Bron-y-Buckley home.
“They haven’t updated us at all and keep saying we need to speak to Sky but obviously Sky is saying they’re providing the service so it’s down to Openreach to replace.
“Openreach have said “it’s not easy because we have to ask for traffic lights from the council”. They said it’s been raised as “urgent” and sent around four different men at different times to the door to tell us “they’re working on it”.
“There’s a neighbour who is elderly and relies on having the home phone because they don’t have a mobile.
“They haven’t even cleared the wires hanging in our gardens, they’re just draping everywhere, even across my neighbour’s child’s trampoline which she doesn’t want to touch just.
“I can’t export any galleries - so I have weddings that have to be delayed because I have a large desktop which I can’t go to people’s houses to use. I don’t think it’s realistic to ask people to move their whole office as they’ve said “can you not go to a local café?” but their WiFi isn’t strong enough to export thousands of huge image files. Also means I cannot import them onto gallery space.
“So obviously it’s brought me back a week on delivery which I have a contract with couples to ensure delivered. Which isn’t fair on them.”
Last week’s drama on the back road resulted in a 33-year old man being charged with driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level is above the limit, being the driver of a vehicle failing to stop after a road accident and causing a vehicle to be left in a dangerous position.
He has been bailed to appear at Welshpool Magistrates court on November 19.
UPDATE: This morning there is activity on the back road with traffic control being put in place, so residents will be hoping it means progress.
