It could be another year before Welshpool welcomes back its ‘bigger and better’ skatepark, an update to town councillors this week has confirmed.
At the latest Town Council Strategy, Policy and Development meeting, Cllr Billy Spencer said he was being “asked on the street, as this is the one thing that everyone wants an update on”.
The popular facility closed during the pandemic due to health and safety concerns, but the Town Council has made it a priority to bring one back and has acquired extra land close to the Maesydre Car Park from Powys County Council for just £1 to create a larger facility than previous.
And in an update provided by committee chair, Cllr Alison Davies, she said things were moving along but not to expect it before the end of this year, at the earliest, as they were still awaiting designs and applying for funding.
“An Expression Of Interest has been sent in to Lottery, and we have a meeting with Lottery booked for January 22,” said Cllr Davies. “We have also got another bid in with the Community Ownership Fund. So, we have two bids for this that went in before Christmas and things are moving with those.
“We are still waiting for the draft designs from Canvas (specialist company) and we did ask them before Christmas to check on progress. But we will be getting something back soon.”
Cllr Phil Pritchard reminded councillors that the Town Council had “promised to get this done”, and added: “There are people that were teenagers when this went out of action that are now married with children.
“So, it needs to be done so can we just make sure we put in every effort to get it done as quickly as possible for the youngsters of the town?”
Cllr Davies responded: “There was even talk that all could be completed by the end of this year, or beginning of 2025. When you think where we are now, that’s pretty exciting.
“We are doing everything. We can’t move faster, but it doesn’t seem to be very fast if you are waiting for a skatepark.”
The skatepark was one of the 'Big Five' stories we featured in the latest MyWelshpoolTV news report which can be watched on our dedicated channel at https://youtu.be/bKsA6kX14ao?si=ToWcxumA31Z0JOLg
