Welshpool has been put on an urgent flood alert tonight after it was predicted that the River Severn is set to peak at up to 5.35 metres in the coming hours.
An area of the river from Coed y Dinas to Leighton Bridge, including parts of Severn Farm Industrial Estate and Leighton, is expected to get even worse tonight, with the A483 at The Moors Straight in danger of becoming impassable.
The warning from Natural Resources Wales tonight reads: “All peak levels are based on the latest forecast as of 7pm (Tuesday). Buttington was 4.99 metres. A peak level between 5.05 and 5.35 metres is possible tomorrow. The following roads could be affected by flooding; The A483 at The Moors Straight, Welshpool.”
The Severn at Llandrinio is expected to peak at up to 7 metres, with the village also placed on flood alert. Roads around Arddleen, Pool Quay and Llanymynech are all expected to be problematic.
There will be a further update provided at 10am tomorrow.
Driving conditions today have been horrendous with surface water creating huge problems on the roads.
Rain is expected to ease overnight, with more showers anticipated tomorrow before some respite over the coming days, albeit with a drop in temperature.
