£13.1m transport boost to Mid Wales

Almost £13.1 million is being invested in transport improvements across Powys and Ceredigion, with funding earmarked for safer roads, better public transport and improved rural connections.

The Welsh Government funding for 2027/28 will support a range of projects under the Mid Wales Regional Transport Plan, aimed at making every-day journeys easier and improving access to jobs, schools, healthcare and other essential services.

The investment follows a similarly substantial allocation for 2026/27, representing a significant increase in transport funding for Mid Wales compared with previous years.

Among the priorities are road safety improvements to reduce serious accidents, upgrades to the highway network and better public transport connections between communities.

Funding will also support new walking and cycling routes, alongside the expansion of electric vehicle charging points across the region.

Cllr Jackie Charlton, Powys County Council's Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, said the investment would deliver practical benefits for local communities.

“This funding is about getting practical improvements delivered for residents across Powys and Ceredigion,” she said.

“It gives us the opportunity to turn our regional transport plan into action — improving everyday journeys, strengthening rural connections and making it easier for people to access work, education, healthcare and essential services.

“Our focus will now be to deliver and make sure this investment makes a real difference to communities across Mid Wales.”

Cllr Shelley Childs, Ceredigion’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Environmental Services, welcomed what he described as a fairer share of national transport funding for the region.

“This continued higher level of support from Welsh Government shows that the Mid Wales region of Powys and Ceredigion is now receiving a fairer allocation of national transport funding,” he said.

He praised the officers, design teams and contractors involved in delivering projects, adding that the investment would help both councils turn their transport ambitions into reality.

The Mid Wales Regional Transport Programme is being delivered jointly by Powys and Ceredigion councils, with a focus on improving rural connectivity, supporting economic growth and providing more sustainable travel options.

The latest funding will allow both authorities to continue developing and delivering schemes designed to make the region's transport network safer, more reliable and accessible for residents, businesses and visitors.
