Welshpool’s former Mayor has revealed that a new 40-bedroom hotel planned for the Buttington roundabout development will be ready “for the Tour de France next year”.
The bombshell news was shared by Cllr Phil Owen at last night’s Events & Planning Committee meeting for the Town Council.
During discussions regarding tourism in the town, Cllr Owen said: “It’s not as if we have a huge number of hotels or guest houses in the town. I suppose that might change when they finish the hotel at Buttington.”
Current Mayor, Cllr Bill Rowell quipped “Once they start the hotel!”
To which Cllr Owen responded: “Well they have said that they will be finished in time for the Tour de France next year!”
One councillor laughed it off as “that will be optimistic”.
Cllr Owen didn’t give any further information as to who had told him about the update, and with just 10 months to go it does seem optimistic.
While KFC, Starbucks, Costa Coffee and the Tesla charging station all sprung up in astonishing time at the development, work on the planned hotel has faced delays with no active construction visible since the site was cleared.
The Town Council has previously highlighted an ongoing need for more accommodation, notably concerning upcoming major events in the town like the Tour de France visit next summer.
