Newtown’s Mayor has paid tribute to emergency services working in and around the town following a series of fires during the recent hot and dry conditions.

Cllr Margaret Lewington, has thanked firefighters, police, ambulance crews, control room staff and volunteers for their work protecting residents, homes and businesses.

It follows a major fire on Trehafren Hill last week which broke out close to homes and required crews to prevent the flames spreading towards nearby properties.

The blaze, on Wednesday evening, came as firefighters were already dealing with another significant fire near Rhayader, putting additional pressure on resources across the area. Nobody was reported injured in the Trehafren Hill fire.

In a letter thanking those involved in the emergency response, Cllr Lewington said: “As Town Mayor I would like to express sincere and heartfelt thanks to all the emergency services working across Newtown, Llanllwchaiarn and the surrounding areas during this extremely difficult and worrying time.

“We all recognise the enormous dedication, courage and professionalism shown by our firefighters, police officers, ambulance crews, control-room staff, volunteers and all those supporting the emergency response.

“At a time when our community is facing considerable concern for the safety of residents, homes, businesses and property, your commitment to protecting our community is deeply appreciated.

“This community knows that many of you are working long hours and putting yourselves in difficult and dangerous situations to keep others safe.

“Thank you for everything you are doing for our community. We are truly grateful for your service, courage and dedication.

“Please stay safe.”

The Trehafren Hill blaze highlighted the heightened fire risk following prolonged dry conditions, with residents urged to remain vigilant and avoid putting additional pressure on emergency crews.
