Nearly £6,700 quote for a single street clean

Newtown Town Council has been quoted nearly £6,700 for a single additional street clean, as it continues to look for ways to ensure streets across the town are kept clean.

Councillors have been considering additional street cleaning alongside existing work to improve the appearance of Newtown.

At the latest meeting of the Town Council, councillors were told that a verbal quote of £6,686.91 plus VAT had been received for one sweep.

The minutes do not identify who provided the quote or specify what would be covered by a single sweep.

Town Clerk Ed Humphreys reported that, despite efforts to obtain a quote for additional street cleaning, it was still outstanding.

The council has also been trying to arrange a mutually agreeable date for the use of Powys County Council's pavement sweeper.

Councillors questioned how many sweeps had been budgeted for, with Mr Humphreys agreeing to check the number and report back.

The discussions are part of wider efforts by the Town Council to keep Newtown clean and improve the appearance of the town.

Earlier this year, the council organised Tidy Newtown 2026 in conjunction with Keep Wales Tidy and Powys County Council.

The week-long initiative in March involved community litter picking across neighbourhoods, estates, parks and the town centre.

A similar programme was held in 2025, with litter picking taking place in areas including Maesyrhandir, Pool Road, the town centre, Vaynor, Trehafren, Treowen and Garthowen.

The Town Council has also previously highlighted concerns over dog fouling in parts of Newtown, including St Mary's, Union Street and Llanfair Road.
