Welshpool to open up camping spaces for Tour de France

26/06/2026 @ 10:10

A new Tour de France task force has been created in Welshpool, and has got stuck into the big question of creating enough places for people to stay.

The town will host Day Three of the sporting world’s biggest spectator event next year on July 4, with the gruelling stage meandering through Powys on its way to Cardiff Castle.

But with so few places to stay locally, concern has been raised as to where the thousands of potential spectators are going to bed down overnight.

A special committee led by the Town Council and consisting of relevant experts from the immediate area has been formed, with an decision already made regarding the issue of accommodation.

At its first meeting, former Mayor Cllr Phil Owen was elected as Chair of the Committee and it was agreed to “authorise the use of Council managed land for overnight camping and parking in relation to Tour de France subject to approval of a fee & charges schedule”.

That decision was ratified by the full council this week, with an added agreement to increase the committee size to enable more expertise to be added.
