Domestic abuse support charity celebrates anniversary

A north Powys charity that has supported thousands of people affected by domestic abuse over the past four and a half decades has celebrated its 45th anniversary.

The Montgomeryshire Family Crisis Centre (MFCC), based in Newtown, marked the milestone with a special event, bringing together supporters, staff, volunteers and members of the community.

The celebration recognised 45 years of work supporting individuals and families across Montgomeryshire and north Powys who have experienced domestic abuse.

Guests heard speeches from Rhiannon Bragg, Maya Jordan and Nicola Garrett, who shared their experiences and highlighted both the continuing impact of domestic abuse and the importance of specialist support services.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of a High Sheriff Award to former MFCC Director Jane Stephens. The award was presented by the High Sheriff of Powys in recognition of her long-standing contribution to the organisation and its work in supporting vulnerable people.

Entertainment during the event was provided by National Milk Bar and the Newtown and District Male Voice Choir.

MFCC Chief Executive Hayley Heard said the anniversary was an opportunity to reflect on the charity’s achievements while looking ahead to future challenges.

“This celebration was not only about reflecting on our history, but also about recognising the strength of the community that continues to support our work,” she said.

“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped us reach this milestone and remain committed to supporting those affected by domestic abuse.”

The organisation thanked those who attended the event, donated raffle prizes and provided financial support, saying the charity’s longevity would not have been possible without continued backing from the local community.

Founded in 1981, MFCC provides support and services for people affected by domestic abuse across north Powys. The charity continues to work with individuals and families across the region, helping them access safety, support and recovery services.
