It’s been kicked around for a few months, but hasn’t been kicked out of the park yet with Welshpool Town Council still determined to exhaust every avenue to see whether a Farmers Market can be held in the town.
Welshpool Town Council’s Events & Planning Committee has been discussing the idea since January and six months down the line, there has been little progress due to a seemingly lack of interest from the farming community.
But at their latest meeting, they agreed that it was too soon to try and make something happen alongside the Continental Market on July 4/5, but shouldn’t bin the idea completely.
Cllr Phil Owen led the calls to keep investigating after saying relatives in the farming community had said they were still popular in other towns.
But he warned that meat was no longer the item of choice to sell due to the need for refrigeration and that eggs, wine and honey were now the popular selling items.
He added: “I just think it is one of those things that is worth trying.”
But Cllr Nick Howells reminded councillors that a previous Farmers Market hadn’t worked in the town due to items being perceived as expensive, and he was also worried that it would be “stepping on the toes” of the Town Hall market traders who pay a rent and sell similar items.
But more investigations will be made by the Town Council before a final decision will be made.
