People in the Welshpool area are being encouraged to find out more about fostering as support events are held in the town during this year’s Foster Care Fortnight campaign.

The campaign, themed “This is Fostering”, highlights the experiences of foster carers across Wales and the role they play in helping children and young people feel safe, valued and secure.

As part of the fortnight, fostering teams will visit two locations in Newtown on Tuesday, May 12, to speak to residents interested in becoming foster carers. The team will be at Costa Coffee from 11am to 1pm and at Morrisons from 10am to 2pm.

The campaign comes as foster carers from Powys shared how everyday family life can help children recover from difficult experiences and build confidence.

Sandra and Jon, who have cared for a young person for several years, said he is now fully part of their wider family.

“For us, fostering is about helping a young person feel safe enough to be themselves,” they said.

“The young person who lives with us is part of our family now, not just in our home, but throughout our wider family too. He’s treated as a younger brother, included in everyday moments, family jokes and shared experiences.

“We think it’s important for him to experience real family life, the laughter, affection and even the occasional disagreement. Those everyday moments help him understand what healthy, caring relationships look like.”

Sharon Powell, Head of Children’s Services, said foster carers were central to helping children stay close to their communities and support networks.

“At Foster Wales Powys, we are incredibly proud of our foster carers and the vital role they play in supporting our children and young people,” she said.

“Our foster carers are absolutely central to our closer to home ambition, enabling children in our care to remain within their own communities, schools and support networks wherever possible.”
