Brook Street won’t be closed at all for gas works

There’s some good news for motorists after the company carrying out the gas works on Brook Street have confirmed that the road will now remain open throughout.

Wales & West Utilities had originally requested a five-week full closure until May 26, but have now decided to manage the work with the traffic lights instead.

The company said it is upgrading the gas pipes in the town, with the work along the ‘Back Road’ to take place ahead of a major road resurfacing project.

The work, which is ongoing until March next year, has been planned with Powys County Council, which is coordinating efforts with utilities ahead of its work to improve and resurface Brook Street.

It is part of a £3.6 million project impacting four towns across Mid Wales.

Wales & West Utilities’ Adam Smith is managing this work and said: “We are working with the Council on the overall project, but the essential work on Brook Street is necessary so that we can complete this section ahead of their programme.

“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”
