Welshpool still paying second highest council tax in Powys

07/03/2026 @ 09:03

Welshpool residents are still paying the second highest council tax in Powys, it has been confirmed.

After the 4.9% rise was accepted by Powys County Council, and despite Welshpool Town Council only adding 2.5% this year, a mighty increase of 7.5% from Dyfed-Powys Police has pushed the Band D council tax up to a whopping £2,546.32 a year, over £200 a month for the first time.

Only Machynlleth - at £2,671.37 - has a higher Council Tax in the whole of Powys.

Of the other four “core” Powys towns, residents of Llandrindod Wells – the county town – will be paying £2,358.99, while Newtown residents of a Band D property will receive a bill of £2,482.56, and Band D properties in Brecon are billed at £2,438.62 and Ystradgynlais for £2,403.84.
