The dire state of local roads has been raised by a local community council during its annual general meeting, which was attended by the retiring Chair of Powys County Council.
Llangynyw Community Council welcomed Cllr Jonathan Wilkinson to the meeting, and used the occasion to highlight that “little seems to be getting done”.
Cllr Wilkinson was in his final days as Chair, and was told that “this is an issue of great concern to the council and is raised at every meeting”.
A spokesperson said: “Potholes, blocked drains, and substandard road surfaces are repeatedly reported to PCC but little seems to be getting done.
“The repairs that are carried out look to be of a poor standard with tarmac being chucked into the potholes resulting in repairs not lasting and needing to be redone within a short space of time.
“We are not blaming the workers; they are only following instructions given by the officers. The council ask that the county councillors scrutinise the work and ensure it is carried out to a proper standard and is value for money.”
Councillors were particularly concerned as when the council hosted the One Voice Wales quarterly meeting the previous month at Pontrobert Village Hall, attendees were told by guest speaker, John Forsey, Head of Highways, Transport and Recycling for Powys County Council, that due to a significant financial shortfall for the next year, key services such as highways will be impacted severely, meaning that ‘A’ roads will be reviewed but many minor roads will not be repaired.
Meanwhile, also at the annual meeting, Cllr Cath Williams was re-elected as Chair; Cllr Meganne Watkins was re-elected Vice-chair and Cllr Nia Williams was re-elected as assistant Vice-Chair.
