Emergency no-shows draining Welshpool doctors time

03/04/2025 @ 10:20

People booking emergency treatment at Welshpool Medical Centre, and then not showing up, are in the firing line after an appeal from the doctors.

The trend is on the up following the introduction of the new triage online system, but it is blocking off valuable GP time and leaving other patients frustrated.

“We have noticed an increasing number of patients requesting urgent, on-the-day appointments and then not turning up for their appointment,” the Practice has said this morning.

“These appointments are for patients who need urgent medical attention, and every missed appointment means another patient in need goes without care.”

The Practice has issued guidance for those feeling they need urgent medical care:

-       If you are in need of urgent on the day care, you need to make sure that you answer your phone to allow the team to offer you a time to come down to the surgery.

-       If you need an urgent on the day appointment and you have requested that we contact you by a text message reply, you need to be looking out for our appointment message on your mobile phone.

-       Please do not access urgent on the day help and then when offered an appointment tell us that you cannot attend.

-       We do have a blend of appointments available at the practice. Urgent, on the day appointments are for acutely unwell symptoms. Our routine appointments are for general health queries, diagnoses and monitoring of conditions. Please try not to access our urgent, on the day appointments for routine problems, unless you have become acutely unwell with your ongoing symptoms.

“We would like to ask all of our patients to help us as your local GP Surgery to help you,” the Practice said.
