With the 80th anniversary of the end of World War 2 Fastly approaching local history enthusiast Alan Crowe has in conjunction with Steven John of West Wales War Memorials compiled a book about all the names on the Welshpool War Memorial and in the Memorial Garden.
Although he has never served in the Armed Forces himself, Alan said he is in awe of the men and women that have or do, and sees himself as an advocate for sharing their experiences and highlighting what they endured when making the ultimate sacrifice. The book includes the fallen from both World Wars as well as conflicts and active service since 1945, who will be remembered by current and future generations.
“Most of us have seen the names on the War Memorial, some of us have even read them, but what do we know about the people behind the names?” he said.
“Hopefully the book will answer many of the questions as it tells - their ages, what service they were in, who their parents were, where they were born, if they had a wife and children, what job they had before being called up, how they were killed, where they are buried, and if not found, on which European Memorial they are Commemorated on.”
Copies of the book can be obtained from Alan himself, Hardy’s Bookstore on Berriew Street, leading book shops and Amazon priced £10.
The book follows hot on the heels of Alan’s recent book - Stars Who Served in WW2.
