Mid Wales is mourning the loss of former Welshpool High School Deputy Head and exceptional sportsman Lyn Meredith, who died on St David’s Day.

Mr Meredith passed away at his Rhayader home but will leave a legacy of being a respected teacher and talented sportsman who even represented Wales in football.

Friend and Welshpool county councillor, Graham Breeze, described him as “a proud father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by all his family”.

“He was a top goalkeeper, playing for Hereford, Llanidloes, Welshpool and other Mid Wales clubs and proudly represented Wales at Amateur International level,” said Cllr Breeze.

“As an aspiring goalkeeper myself, he taught me the art of barking out orders to defenders and was always ready with words of friendly advice.

“Cricket was his other sporting love representing Llanidloes and playing for Montgomeryshire County Cricket Club.”

Lyn taught at Welshpool High School for 22 years and lived in both Guilsfield and in the town. He originally came to Welshpool as Head of Chemistry, became Head of Science, Senior Teacher and then served as Deputy Head from 1985 to1992 before retiring.

He then moved to Rhayader to help run a family business along with his late wife Eunice.
