Montgomeryshire can celebrate an Oscar winner after former Ysgol Llanfyllin pupil Lauri ‘Lol’ Crawley won a gong at last night’s glittering Hollywood ceremony.

Lol won the Best Cinematography Oscar for the critically acclaimed The Brutalist, and it follows up the same award he won at the prestigious Baftas just 10 days ago.

Born ins Shrewsbury, Lol grew up in Llansantffraid with his parents and two older sisters. He attended Ysgol Llanfyllin and Oswestry College before completing a BTEC National Diploma in Audio Visual Studies at The North East Wales Institute, and then studying at Northumbria University, where he earned a BA Hons.

Last month his Bafta was celebrated at Ysgol Llanfyllin when head teacher Dewi Owen said: “Lol’s journey from a pupil at Ysgol Llanfyllin to an internationally celebrated cinematographer is an inspiration to our students and the wider community. His success highlights the incredible potential of young people from our school and local area to achieve greatness in the creative industries and beyond.”

The Brutalist also received awards in Best Original Score for Daniel Blumberg and Best Actor for Adrien Brody.

The biggest winner on the night was Anora with five wins, including the night’s most coveted prize Best Picture. The Sean Baker film also received wins for Best Director, Best Editing (Sean Baker), Best Actress (Mikey Madison) and Best Original Screenplay (Sean Baker).
