Welshpool missing out on Co-op expansion

15/01/2025 @ 10:07

Supermarket giant Co-op is opening 75 new stores across the UK this year, but has no plans to enter Welshpool at the moment.

There were hopes that the vacant Sainsbury’s eye-sore in the centre of town may finally find a new tenant when Co-op made its New Year announcement, but a company insider told us Welshpool wasn’t on its radar.

“Not at the moment” they told us after we followed up their announcement, but there is hope for the future with the company stating: “Co-op continues to look for both freehold and leasehold retail space as it maintains its momentum and growth in convenience.”

Welshpool already has Tesco, Morrisons and Aldi, at the expense of the Spar and Sainsbury’s closing, and, while it is believed that both Lidl and Co-op have had representatives eying the town recently, nothing appears planned in the short term.
