Welshpool’s Deputy Mayor, acting in an individual capacity and not representing the council, joined protesters outside the Banking Hub on Friday to protest Barclays’ alleged links to firms who fund the genocide in Gaza.
Cllr David France joined local Palestine solidarity activists calling for a boycott of Barclays over its funding of arms for Israel.
The Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) says Barclays holds over £2 billion in shares and provides £6.1 billion in loans and underwriting to nine companies whose weapons, components and military technology are being used by Israel in its attacks on Gaza and other occupied Palestinian territories.
Barclays has responded previously to claims linking it to the ongoing conflict, and a latest statement can be read here: https://home.barclays/sustainability/esg-resource-hub/statements-and-policy-positions/statement-on-defence-funding/
Cllr France said: “I banked with Barclays since I was a child, but recently switched banks. What Barclays don’t tell you is that they’re market leaders when it comes to trashing the planet and funding the weapons used in the Gaza genocide.
“A just-released peer-reviewed study suggests that violent deaths in Gaza have been under-reported by tens of thousands. I was proud to join local activists in Welshpool today, and to add my voice to the likes of our MP Steve Witherden in calling for doing everything we can to end the genocide in Gaza.”
Israeli forces have killed at least 46,006 and wounded 109,378 Palestinians in Gaza in the last 15 months alone. Many thousands more are buried under rubble, presumed dead, or have died due to preventable disease.
The Banking Hub previously saw a one-man protest in response to its lack of activity in creating disabled access to the premises, an issue that hasn’t been resolved.
