Ysgol Pennant in Penybontfawr have received an exemplary Estyn report, stating that the school has a “happy and familial community that provides education and care of a high standard for its pupils”.

The review was held just a month into the new school year in September, with inspectors confirming that “pupils very much enjoy coming to school and are very proud to be part of its community”.

Cllr Bryn Davies, Chair of Governors added: “Locally, and those of us involved in the wider school community were already aware of the high standard of education and care provided at Ysgol Pennant and the important role that they play in the local community – but to have it confirmed in such a glowing report by Estyn is praise indeed for our hardworking staff and fantastic pupils.”

He added: “Despite half of the pupils coming from non-Welsh speaking households, it fills me with joy to read in the report that ‘the Welsh language is at the heart of the school and pupils’ pride in the Welsh language is obvious’.

“All pupils who attend Ysgol Pennant leave fully bilingual in both Welsh and English, which will benefit them greatly whatever their future paths may be. The report goes on to describe how all pupils ‘use the language completely naturally during the day’ and the extensive experiences provided by staff allow them all to have ‘a sound understanding of the history and culture of their local area, the wider community and Wales’.

“Ysgol Pennant demonstrates that full fluent bilingualism can be achieved by children and adults of all abilities and backgrounds.”

Other highlights of the Estyn report include the ‘caring nature of the staff and the respect with which pupils treat each other, staff and visitors are a strong feature of the school. The sense of team among the school is a robust quality’.

Another of the Governors Mrs Rhian Briscoe and a parent at the school added: “I would personally like to thank Ms Jane Peate, headteacher at Ysgol Pennant and her team of hardworking staff for providing education and care of the highest quality in our village school. They deservedly receive high praise indeed in the Estyn report.”
