All to play for at halfway stage of pool league

The Welshpool and District Pool League is set for an exciting second half of the season with all to play from across all three divisions, writes Joe Long.

Teams across all divisions are positioning themselves for the race towards promotion or the fight to avoid relegation, and with nine weeks to, every point gained or lost could prove vital.

In the Premier Division, reigning champions, the Jockey A, lead the way with an

impressive 15 points, chalking up seven wins from nine matches, with Carl Clarke boasting a 92.85% win-rate.

Angels Pride and the Punchbowl follow closely, with both tied on 12 points but separated by the Pride’s superior frame difference. The Angels Pride face the Jockey A in the first game back from the Christmas break and if the Jockey get the win, it could prove difficult to catch them.

Lee Barker from the Angels Pride currently tops the stats with 15/18, but Carl Guntrip from the Jockey A and Ash Davies form the Oak A are both just one frame behind, with Ash performing admirably as his team struggle to match his form and sit 7th in the table.

At the other end of the table, Wandering Dragons and Hells Angels are in dire straits, with both sitting in relegation spots. With just two points, the Dragons need a miracle to avoid the drop, while Hells Angels will need to turn tight matches into wins to escape danger. The Hells Angels play the Pussy Cats on March 5, in what could be their best chance to catch up to the midfield pack.

In the second tier, Breidden Tigers have been unstoppable, charging ahead with nine wins out of nine and a staggering +50 frame difference. Barry Emberton has been flawless, winning every match this season, with captain Scott Clifford offering stellar support.

The battle for the second promotion spot is heating up between Roaring Lions and Smoking Dragons, tied on 12 points but separated by frame difference. The two teams play each other in the first game back, with the Smoking Dragons winning the reverse fixture in the opening game, this one almost counts double for the Lions.

At the bottom, the Crown look destined for back-to-back relegations with just one win so

far, but with six teams within three points of the second relegation place, every game will be a do-or-die to stay in the division.

The Courthouse derby between the Offenders and the Judges will be crucial, with them both currently tied ninth, so it will be an intriguing first match back from the break.

In Division Two, The Dogs of Sarn have unleashed their full potential, remaining unbeaten with 17 points and a +50 frame difference. With players like Conor Jones (100%) and Ted Pryce (88.88%) leading the stats, they look destined for promotion. The real excitement lies in the battle for the second spot, with Grapes and Eaters locked in a tense fight at 14 points each. Russel Vaughan and Ben Saxton have been crucial for their teams, and their clash on March 5 could decide who goes up.

The Talboteers can’t be overlooked though, as they are just two points behind and have form on their side. If they can get an upset against the Dogs of Sarn in their first match back, they

truly could be in pole position.

It’s the first season in the league for both the Powys Potters and Hog Fathers and neither

side have had much of a run. Joined by the Purring Pussys, the three sides are battling to not get the wooden with just one win each this season, trading wins against each other, and with the Hog Fathers hosting the Potters on the last day of the season, this race might not be decided any time soon.
