Things appear to be moving forward with plans to create a new state-of-the-art skatepark Welshpool.
After nearly a year of being stuck in the mud and councillors airing their frustrations at the lack of progress, tonight’s Strategy, Planning and Development meeting for the Town Council includes an agenda item to “discuss the skatepark in private and confidential session at the end of the meeting”.
The agenda goes on to explain that “plans have come through and they have been sent to councillors to discuss and agree a way forward”.
Specialist company Canvas have been criticised by town councillors for their lack of correspondence since sharing their artist impressions earlier this year of what the potential park could look like (pictured).
It is expected to be a costly project, with similar parks in other parts of the UK costing anything up to £500,000 in recent years, but Welshpool Town Council has vowed to make it a priority to replace the facility it closed suddenly during the Covid crisis due to health and safety concerns. Officers have already reached out to major grant providers with expressions of interest to prepare for a bid.
The former tennis courts area at Maesydre, which is now a car park, is earmarked for the new park, but planning permission will also be needed.
Tonight’s meeting is open to the public, both in person and on Zoom, apart from the private sessions when press and public are asked to leave.
