COBRA Rugby Club pays tribute to coach Rhys

COBRA Rugby Club has issued a touching tribute to one of its junior coaches, Rhys Jenkins, who tragically died last Saturday evening.

Rhys was a much-loved and respected junior coach with the Meifod-based club, and his untimely death has stunned the area.

Last night, the club posted on its Facebook page:

“At COBRA RFC, we are devastated to hear of the tragic passing of Rhys Jenkins.

“Rhys was a hugely valued and much-loved member of COBRA. He was a dedicated head coach of our under 10 side, devoting much time to support our young players demonstrating his knowledge and passion for the game.

“He was also a highly respected referee and had refereed games throughout Wales and New Zealand.

“But above all, Rhys was a genuinely nice person who will be greatly missed - not just by his young team - but by everyone associated with the Club.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Carrie, sons Ioan and Gruff, and all the family and many friends, to whom we extend our sincere and deepest sympathies.”

Two men were remanded in custody this week following the three-vehicle road traffic accident near the Horseshoes Pub just outside Welshpool last Saturday evening, that caused Rhys’s tragic death.

Abubakr Yusaf and Umar Yusaf, from Manchester, appeared at Welshpool Magistrates Court for an initial hearing, and the case was immediately sent to Mold Crown Court on December 20, due to its seriousness.

Abubakr Yusaf, who was driving a red BMW X3, faces six charges including causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs.

Umar Yusaf, who was behind the wheel of a blue Audi S4, faces four charges including causing death by dangerous driving.
