It was certainly a Remembrance Sunday to remember for one charismatic Welshpool resident who joined the Parade in London as a representative of a charity that honours the frontline entertainers.
Alan Crowe is a year-round fundraiser for the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA) which was established in 1939 to provide entertainment for British armed forces personnel during World War II.
Earlier this year, Alan wrote to the organisers of London’s Remembrance Sunday Parade as a representative of the ENSA Memorial Appeal and was delighted that they were extended an invitation to attend for the first time.
His story was covered by ITV news on their prime-time evening slot with an interview with Alan on why ENSA’s role was so important in supporting the frontline troops during World War II.
“When they agreed to include us this year, I recruited a number of people with ENSA connections to alsom attend,” said Mr Crowe, the lead organiser for the town's annual 1940s Weekend.
“As a result of it all I have managed to raise the profile of the charity and helped to educate people on the role that ENSA played during WW2.
“I have been part of Remembrance Parades since I was a seven-year-old cub-scout, and have only missed about a handful in the last 58 years.
“But this has to be the icing on the cake as nothing could surpass it as far as parades go. The sheer volume of people taking part, the throngs of people lining the streets etc.
“Sincere thanks and best wishes to the organising team for such a marvellous experience, superbly organised and executed.”
Meanwhile Welshpool’s parade has been praised once again, with a large turnout and support.
