Grants available for tourism projects

23/10/2024 @ 09:48

Local organisations with plans for green small-scale tourism infrastructure improvements in the Welshpool and Newtown areas are being urged to get in touch with the county council.

It plans to submit a bid to Welsh Government for up to £300,000 worth of Brilliant Basics Funded schemes for 2025-27.

Only local authorities (county councils) and national park authorities can apply for the money so, Powys County Council is looking to submit an ‘umbrella bid’ on behalf of several organisations for a range of Powys projects.

The money can be used to cover up to 80% of the cost of any planned works that will help to reduce carbon emissions. Projects must also meet one of these three criteria:

  1. Alleviate pressure at a tourism ‘hot spot’.
  2. Improve accessibility for visitors with additional needs.
  3. Help visitors learn more about local produce, history or culture (including the Welsh language).

Any organisations that would like to be part of a combined Powys bid should complete a project information form before 9am, November 4: tourism@powys.gov.uk

“We want to find the best green tourism infrastructure plans in Powys to include in this bid to Welsh Government,” said Councillor David Selby, Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for a More Prosperous Powys. “Visitors are incredibly important to the county’s economy. We want to give them a warm welcome and help them enjoy Powys in the most sustainable way possible.

“All prospective bids will be assessed on their suitability, deliverability and expected benefit to the Powys visitor economy and experience.”

Powys County Council was successful in securing £300,000 for 10 projects in the last round of Brilliant Basics funding covering 2023-25. This included £37,000 for the revamp of facilities at the YHA hostel near Brecon and £53,000 to improve access to, and knowledge about, different parts of the Elan Valley.
