Reprieved school looks ahead to a brighter future

A local village school that was earmarked for closure says it is looking forward to a brighter future having being saved by a county council change of heart.

Brynhafren Primary School at Crew Green provides students for both Welshpool and Llanfyllin high schools but with small numbers, it had come onto the county council’s radar as one that should be recommended for closure.

But with the council reviewing the decision last month, noting that flooding of the B4393 made travel to alternative schools in Arddleen and Llandysilio difficult, the school can now plan ahead.

“The whole team at Brynhafren are delighted with the recent decision that we will be remaining open,” said headteacher Alison Ellis.

“We are a school, with an enthusiastic staff, and are at the heart of our community.

“Although small, we ensure that all of our learners get the best possible opportunities, by providing a stimulating and relevant curriculum and offer many different activities to enhance the learning experiences.

Ms Ellis said that it was hoping to attract new pupils for the next school year and said that their free Stay and Play sessions every Wednesday afternoon from 1.30pm-3pm during term time were popular in providing the chance for parents and pre-school children to meet other families.

Back in May, inspectors Estyn described Brynhafren as “a happy and inclusive school where pupils thrive”, and the “dedicated head teacher and staff work together effectively to ensure that the well-being of pupils is at the forefront of the school”.

The school is holding a Christmas Fair on Friday, November 29, stalls are £10 and can be booked through head@brynhafren.powys.sch.uk.

Powys County Council has long term plans to merge Carreghofa (Llanymynech), Llandysilio (Four Crosses), Arddleen and Brynhafren primary schools into one super school as part of a £300m school building programme for the next decade.
