Another Welshpool Town Council by-election could be held for the Castle Ward after it was confirmed last night that one of the longest serving councillors looks set to stand down.
Cllr Hazel Evans, an Independent, has been absent from meetings for several months, and at last night’s full council meeting, the Town Mayor, Cllr Phil Owen, explained that a letter had been sent enquiring on her wellbeing and her family had responded that “she is unlikely to return to council”.
“I would like to thank Hazel for all she has done for this council and the town for many years,” said Cllr Owen. “She is a dear friend to many of us so this a sad day.”
The town held a poorly attended by-election this summer when Cllr Bill Rowell won the vacant seat in a three-way vote.
